Origami is a unique form of art that originated in Japan and means paper folding. There are thousands of shapes and many different kinds of paper used for origami. Origami paper is a 15 cm square nicely colored, normal paper. There is also Japanese Washi paper: «Chiyogami», that is printed with different patterns. The origami crane is the most frequently folded origami of Japan. It has a beautiful shape and is also a symbol of long life. Folding a thousand origami cranes is considered a good gift for sick people and is called «Senba-Zuru».
Origami has different levels of difficulty, from simple shapes, for kids to play, to very complicated as an art. In kindergarten, children are taught simple origami for educational purposes. Advanced artistic origami is taught and developed in cultural centers.
